Distinct acoustic properties pattern differently in a sound change in progress in Hong Kong Cantonese

چکیده

Previous work on Hong Kong Cantonese has reported evidence of an incomplete neutralization between the labialized velar /kʷ/ and plain /k/, where both may be produced as a [k] before /ɔ/, although non-neutralized forms are also to some extent for speakers (Bauer 1982, Zee 1999, To, Mcleod & Cheung 2015). The present study examines this phenomenon acoustically, evaluates what properties labialization in neutralizing environment. Fourteen native were recorded production experiment; these recordings analyzed by examining formant values, duration, rise time intensity vowels following target segments. Results reveal that while many acoustic differences /k/ maintained environment, neutralize F3 duration measures. Patterns variation furthermore suggest utilize differently, indicating greater degrees (incomplete) than others.

Innovative sound changes in Hong Kong Cantonese: the case of syllable-final consonant alveolarisation

This talk presents findings from a study on alveolarization in Hong Kong Cantonese, a phenomenon whereby velar nasal –ŋ and velar stop –k syllable-final consonants are fronted to alveolar counterparts -n and -t respectively. Since one of the first descriptions on alveolarization (Bauer 1979), there have been a number of quantitative sociolinguistic studies on sound changes, particularly of the ...

Acoustic Analysis of the New Rising Tone in Hong Kong Cantonese

Hong Kong Cantonese has six contrastive tones. A previous study, however, has indentified a group of speakers who merged the high rising tone with the low rising tone in both production and perception. This study investigated the acoustic characteristics of the rising tones produced by three mergers and three non-mergers identified in the previous study, and consequently, characterized the mech...

Syllable Fusion and Speech Rate in Hong Kong Cantonese

Syllable fusion is a Hong Kong Cantonese connected speech process, whereby edges of syllables are obscured by consonant lenition or deletion, and vowel reduction. More extreme fusion can simplify contour tones and merge the qualities of vowels that would be separated by an onset or coda consonant at more normal degrees of disjuncture between words. This paper investigates the influence of speec...

Prosodic Focus in Hong Kong Cantonese without Post-focus Compression

A recent study reported that post-focus compression (PFC) previously found in Beijing Mandarin is absent in two related languages, Taiwanese and Taiwan Mandarin, and that PFC is beneficial to focus recognition. This paper presents the results of acoustic and perception experiments for Hong Kong Cantonese, another Chinese dialect, which show that PFC does not occur in Hong Kong Cantonese, making...
